A single person walks along the ridge of an enormous sand dune, filmed from high above. Jonah made this film on a trip to the desert, on the one morning when the wind dropped enough to fly.

## Scale

The walker is the point of the film. Without a person, a dune is just a shape, and you cannot tell whether it is ten metres high or three hundred. With one small figure on the ridge, the size becomes real. The walker is our guide, Karim, who agreed to walk the ridge three times while Jonah flew.

## Sand and drones

Sand is dangerous for a drone. Fine grains get into the motors and the camera. Jonah launched and landed from a small mat, never from the sand itself, and did not fly at all on windy days. Of six mornings in the desert, only one was calm enough.

## Early light

The film was made in the first half hour after sunrise. Low sun makes every ripple in the sand cast a small shadow, so the dunes look sculpted. By ten o'clock, the light was flat and the sand was too hot to touch.

## The edit

The film is almost one continuous shot. The drone starts low, follows the walker and then rises slowly until the dunes fill the frame from edge to edge. We cut only once, at the moment the walker reaches the top, to skip a few seconds where Karim stopped to drink water.

## Colour

Desert sand changes colour through the day. At sunrise, it glows orange and red. By midday, it is pale yellow, almost white. Our film was made in the soft light just after sunrise, before the strong colour faded. In the edit, we cooled the colour slightly, because the camera made the sand look more orange than it looked to us. The aim is always the same: to make the film feel the way the place felt, not to make it as colourful as possible.

## Permission

Many desert areas are protected, and flying a drone often needs a permit. Karim's company arranged ours, which took three weeks. Without a local guide, we would not have known where we were allowed to fly, or where it was safe to walk.

🏜️

Carry more water than you think you need. In the desert, even a short walk up a dune is hard work.

#### How tall is the dune?

About two hundred metres from the valley floor, according to Karim.

#### Did the footprints spoil the shot?

We filmed the first walk of the morning, on clean sand. The later takes were full of footprints.
