In late July, the wheat fields outside the town turn gold, and on a windy evening they move like water. Theo filmed twenty-eight seconds with the camera low among the stalks, just before the harvest.

## Low and close

Most films of wheat fields are wide: a sea of gold and a blue sky. We wanted to be inside the field. Theo set the camera at the height of the ears of wheat, so the nearest stalks fill the frame and the rest of the field fades behind them. It feels like standing in the middle of it.

We asked the farmer before we went in, and we walked only along the tractor lines, so we did not damage the crop.

## Evening light

The light in the film comes from low behind the field, about an hour before sunset. Light from behind makes the fine hairs on each ear of wheat glow. An hour earlier, with the sun high, the same field looked flat and yellow.

## The sound of wheat

Wheat in the wind makes a dry, soft rushing sound, a little like distant rain. Lina recorded it from the edge of the field with the microphone low and covered in a fur windshield. Without the windshield, the wind would have drowned out the wheat.

## Focus

With the camera so close to the stalks, focus became the main decision. If the nearest ears are sharp, the field behind is a soft golden blur. If the field is sharp, the front stalks become out-of-focus shapes across the picture. We tried both. The version in the film keeps the nearest ears sharp, because the eye goes to the sharpest thing, and the sharpest thing should be the wheat moving in the wind. Theo pulled the focus by hand, slowly, as the stalks swayed in and out of the frame.

## Four days

The farmer harvested the field four days after we filmed. When we drove past the following week, it was short yellow stubble and round bales. The film is now the only record of the field that summer, and the farmer has it on his phone.

🌾

Always ask before you walk into a field. A crop is someone's work and income, and a path through it can cost money.

#### Was it windy all evening?

In gusts. We filmed for an hour and used one gust that lasted about ten seconds.
